  Actor Richard Farnsworth dies at 80

LINCOLN, N.M.- Richard Farnsworth, a two-time Academy Award nominee who charmed Canadians as Mathew Cuthburt in Anne of Green Gables, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday night at his home in Lincoln, New Mexico.

He was 80 years old.

Several years ago, Farnsworth was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Farnsworth's career in filmmaking spanned more than 60 years. He was a stuntman in his native Los Angeles for 30 years before he moved into acting at age 57.

Earlier this year, Farnsworth was nominated for his portrayal of Alvin Straight in The Straight Story, based on the true story of an Iowa man travelling by lawnmower to visit his estranged brother.

Farnsworth also appeared in the Canadian production The Grey Fox, as well as the well-known U.S. films The Natural, Resurrection and Rhinestone.
